About Us

Your host, Charles, has spent the greater part of his life in Christchurch. He was schooled at Christchurch Boy's High and Christ's College, which are two of the oldest schools in Christchurch.

He trained in electronics, in physics and science, with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and was lucky enough to travel to Scott Bass in Antarctica when he was 18. He continued his work with DSIR and went on various oceanographic cruises in the subsequent years. His electronics engineering was never far from work as he enjoyed working in and around Canterbury towns such as Timaru, Twizel, Mayfield, and Ashburton.

He enjoys music, particularly the late 50's and early 60s, and he owns a 1969 Wurlitzer Jukebox.

Around 4 years ago, Charles started the Avon Lodge Central Motel Apartment, because of its brilliant location, and nearby amenities. He loves meeting people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe.

He is more than happy to answer questions about attractions, and local Christchurch and Canterbury history.

His son, David, has put together the website and will occasionally reply to emails and take bookings in Charles's absence.

David works for the NZ Rockshops in the e-Commerce Department. He plays bass and guitar, writes short stories and has three young children which keep him occupied - although he attempts to palm them off to Charles as much as he can.

If you have any questions about the Avon Lodge, or any special requirements, please use the Contact Page to send an email. We aim to reply with 24-48hrs.
